It´s always a good idea to be prepared for everything, I mean, analyse the situation, try to anticipate what could happen, how it´ll affect me, and the best part, minimize the impact of it with a good action plan, carefuly created, considering different scenarios and possibilities!
You may be asking yourself, WTH he´s talking about?! How to approach a network issue?! Maybe some “magical” solution to deal with SPs around the world, the same ones who gives us such headache to isolate a connection issue (have you ever noticed that the problem is always in our network, and not on their connection?!) Lol! I always have some fun when dealing with them! :)
Anyway, no, that´s not what I´m talking about… unfortunately… I´m talking about the economy issues we´re facing lately!
Many friends lost their jobs due to this “Economic Crisis”, companies are reducing their staffs, trying to stay on the market during these days… Just look around, and you´ll see that you know someone who lost his/her job due to that (also, there are some companies’ who´re using this crisis as an excuse to replace their teams, but that´s not the point)…
My question is: have you ever thought about “what would happen if I lost my current job?!”… Probably most of us, right?! And how about, what could I do to minimize the impact if that ever (I hope not) happens?!
Saving some money for difficult times is always a good idea, but´s not a solution! Keeping in touch with your friends, contacts and everyone who could help you finding another position works nice as well… but that could take some time too!
A third possibility would be prepared to open a business on your own… Consulting, teaching, anything that you´re good on, and could sell to others! Knowledge is a powerful “product” if you know what I mean! ;) Come on! To be a well prepared tech/engineer you have studied for hours, days, months, years, plus hands on time on lab, and the most important, you have experience in “real world scenarios” during all those years working in different networks and situations!
But please, do not understand me wrong! I´m not saying, quit your current job, and start working for yourself, not at all! I´m talking about been prepared for the worst case scenario, which in this case, means, be unemployed, a situation that can either happen (hope not) or not!
It takes a considerable amount of time to prepare a plan like that, starting from choosing “your” company name, the services you´re going to provide, how you´re going to delivery those services to your customers, how to approach the customers, and things like that! This “work” can take from weeks, to a full year (or even more) to come with a well prepared action plan to put in practice!
At home, after a full day at your work, before jumping your face in a pile of books that are confortable sitting under your desk, try to visit some of your “competitors” websites, see what they´re offering, how they do that, and the most difficult part, start writing yours, not talking about hmtl and stuffs like that, but the texts you could use in your website if you ever open your company, you´ll see how difficult it is (well, at least to me it is)…
Also, check how could you legally open this new “company”, which documentation would you need, which forms to fill, you´ll need someone to assist you?! Who?! How long it takes to have a company opened?! Check every little detail that you may possible need to do that and start to write your own plan with all this information!
The goal here is not to quit your job, spend any money, or use all of your free time to do that, not at all! The idea is to have a “plan” if something bad happens, minimizing the impact in your life. For sure you´ll be way more prepared if you start to work your ideas now! You can quickly open a little company of your own, start to do some jobs here and there while you search for a good position in a bigger company! Imagine if it works better than you thought and you decide to work for yourself now?! Would that be good?! I bet it would!
Just remember, a well prepared and solid plan makes all the difference between the success and the failure! Keep in mind that “the opportunity always comes from the difficulty!” ;)
Good lucky to everybody!
Cheers!
