A History of How Geeks Changed the World

by Eman

If you have followed my musings you realize that I have become known as that guy who saved the world. I started small by feeding the squirrels in my yard and then took on the challenge of saving the world back in November of 2008. (http://www.ccieflyer.com/Dec2008-work-work-work.php) But nothing I have done made the world worth saving. You see if the geeks had not come along and made the planet worth my time, I may have lapsed into drug abuse or shisha smoking (which I discovered on my trip to Dubai.) Combining the two might still be an option for me though! But I digress this is about how geeks made the world worth saving and how I can help geeks meet interesting life partners! (A geek dating service for CCIEs would probably make me a fortune!)

Geeks have often been the point of consternation and the butt of jokes for centuries. But there were times when the word geek was not part of our vocabulary. A very long time ago geeks were not called geeks. (Really I don’t lie about geeks, maybe the fish I have caught or girls I have kissed, but not geeks.) Think about the first geek for a second. The Cavegeek!

The discovery of fire!

Some poor cavegeek who first figured out how to bring fire back to the tribe and maintain the fire was probably made fun of. I am sure he did not look much different from the hippiegeeks of the 1960s with long hair and a beard along with poor bathing habits and lacking social skills. Back in those days it was OK to go without bathing and to grunt in response to social interactions requiring a verbal response. But before the 1960s a cavegeek had to out run predators and avoid the tough guys as well communicate. He probably stood back and admired the first fire he created. He probably was shoved aside by some over developed hunter cavedude who then stole his flame to take back and show off to some other tribe!

But this first cavegeek probably opened the door to new social discourse and other inventions. Most cavemen probably were limited to activities during the daylight hours and now were free to interact even at night. They probably invented shadow cavepuppets and fireside activities unheard of before. Like the yippiegeeks who changed the world with the internet the cavegeek had no idea what would come of his mighty discovery. It took other cavegeeks who used that cavegeek’s miracle to expand into Facebook and YouTube like discoveries from Xgengeeks of today. Even the discovery of music might be attributed to the cavegeek’s original efforts. After all who cannot help but sing around a campfire?

Because of the dawn of the first cavegeek the world was changed forever. Through history there have been milestones marked by the discoveries made by geeks. The invention of the wheel heralded the beginning of transportation. Imagine how this helped create commerce in the early human tribes. With the wheel many things were made possible. Cargoes could now be hauled that a single human could not carry, instead born on the wheel. But what really would have happened if geeks waited for others to support their minds creations? Imagine if the first wheel inventor had to seek funding or support from focus groups?

Still the cavegeek prevailed and now we have tires on cars! The Stone Age gave way to the Paleolithic Age. This was the age of geeks that brought the Mesolithic age. Yes geeks were creating tools and their communities were using them to some advantage. There was a growing belief that one day the great white hope would emerge in the form of the Gatesgeek. So the size of mice began to be monitored along with the devolution of their incisors, knowing that soon they would replace the command line interfaces shouted for such labors as lowering draw bridges on castles and raising them without bugs or missed upgrades and without biting!

The dawn of the geeks’ true powers was revealed in the form of armaments after the various geeks’ influences over different civilizations lead to epic battles. England was a prime example with the spread of colonialism based on geek technologies.

Geeks were in their heyday around this period and the future for them was bright. But looming dark on the horizon was the winds of political strife that would lead to geeks collecting in one safe haven for decades.
